How to Choose a Subwoofer

Subwoofers reproduce bass guitar and drum notes, and the BOOM of an explosion. They provide the emotional foundation and a lot of the enjoyment in listening to music and soundtracks.

Choosing a subwoofer depends on your environment and your budget. Inexpensive 99 subwoofers are OK for occasional movie watching. However, good subwoofers will offer the following:

  • A crossover that sends low frequencies to the subwoofer.
  • A built-in amplifier with 100 watts of continuous power.
  • A driver that’s large enough (8” diameter at the minimum) for real low frequency reproduction.

Adding a Subwoofer to your Main Speakers for music listening

Adding a subwoofer to your system will greatly increase the quality of your main speakers. If your bookshelf, micro or flat panel TV speakers no longer have to try and reproduce the deeper notes in a musical passage they can concentrate on giving your smoother highs and midrange coverage. This will result in smoother vocals, guitars, violins enhancing your overall musical experience.

Size and style of a Subwoofer

As with other speakers, consider the size and style of your subwoofer and how it will fit in your room. The Speaker Company offers several subwoofers to meet your needs without sacrificing sound quality. Click here to visit our subwoofer section
