Choosing Outdoor Speakers

Choosing Indoor/Outdoor Speaker

Whether you’re moving the party outdoors or want an enjoyable afternoon on the deck reading a book, high quality indoor/outdoor speakers add a higher level of enjoyment to your activities.

Indoor/Outdoor speakers come in many sizes and prices. But you can narrow your search by asking some simple questions:

  • How do they sound?
  • How do they look?
  • How easy are they to set up?
  • Are they weather-resistant or weather-proof?

Sound Quality

Ideally, Indoor/Outdoor speakers should sound as good as indoor-only speakers of the same or slightly lower price. Indoor-Outdoor speakers are designed to withstand more variations in temperature and humidity than indoor-only models. This usually means that the enclosure is molded polymer that’s highly resistant to rain, snow, fog, or mist.

Appearance

Molding also means that these speakers can be highly styled so they blend in very well with home exteriors.

Weather-resistant or Weather-proof?

Even though these enclosures are very resistant to moisture, very few Indoor/Outdoor speakers are truly weather-proof. Weather-resistant speakers can handle an occasional shower or light rain without any problem but probably won’t do as well under the extreme conditions you’d find in a rainforest, for example. Just to give you an idea, a weather-proof speaker needs a cone and surround that’s totally impervious to moisture. Bass reflex enclosures are out of the question as the port in a bass reflex design provides an easy entrance for lots of moisture. In addition, speaker wire connections must absolutely shield the connector and wire ends from all kinds of moisture. This is very expensive to do and really doesn’t give the average homeowner any advantage at all.

Set-Up

Indoor/Outdoor speakers are almost as easy to set up as indoor-only models. The only difference is mounting adjustable brackets that hold the speakers so they don’t fall down or twist out of place in a high wind. Once this bracket is in place and you’ve mounted the speakers in the bracket, you only have to connect wires from your amplifier or receiver to get the same sound outdoors as you enjoy indoors.
