A Guide To In-wall & In Ceiling Speakers

How To Choose In-Wall/In-Ceiling Speakers

Some people don’t like conventional “box” loudspeakers regardless of how small they are. So, if you’re tight for space or just want a “speaker-less” look in a room, consider architectural speakers that can be mounted flush in most walls and ceilings.

When considering in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, you should think about installation, sound quality, and how they will help you achieve your sonic goals. Although far from exhaustive, the following questions will get you thinking.

Is it hard to install in-wall and in-ceiling speakers?

No, it isn’t. You have two choices. First, you can choose a custom-installation professional to handle the project. Or you can go the DIY (do-it-yourself) route . If you do, you’ll find the process of actually mounting the speakers remarkably easy. But you’ll still need a few basic skills. You must feel comfortable cutting holes in your walls or ceilings and you’ll need these basic tools:

  • A sheetrock saw to do the actual cutting
  • A Phillips-head screwdriver to mount the speakers into the cutouts you’ve just made.
  • Wire strippers to take the insulation off the ends of your speaker wire

Running wires to the speakers from your receiver or amplifier will be more challenging, particularly if you must get those wires from one floor to another or run them through solid walls.

Do traditional speakers sound better than in-wall or in-ceiling speakers?

Not necessarily. In-wall and in-ceiling speakers can sound just as good as traditional loudspeakers provided they are properly installed. In general, walls or ceilings should be solidly made of modern sheetrock and well-insulated. Remember that a conventional speaker’s enclosure (the cabinet) contributes to its sound quality. When you install a speaker in a wall or ceiling, the cavity behind the speaker effectively becomes the enclosure. Wall-to-wall (or ceiling-to-ceiling) differences will change the way a speaker sounds.

Do In-wall and In-ceiling speakers work for Home Theater?

Yes. And sometimes amazingly well! If you have a wall-mounted flat panel TV, in-wall speakers for Left, Center, and Right channels will help you reclaim even more living space. Likewise, in-wall or in-ceiling speakers can solve the “where do I put the Surround speakers?” question admirably. (In general, we don’t recommend in-ceiling speakers for front channels as they don’t provide the specific imaging essential for a good home theater or music system.) If you anticipate a “mostly movies” system, in-ceiling or in-wall speakers are great for surround use. If your preferences run to “mostly music,” consider in-wall surround as your best choice.
